One of the simplest and most essential practices in healing, especially when navigating or recovering from cancer, is staying well hydrated. It’s easy to overlook, but water plays a central role in nearly every function of the body; from flushing out toxins to supporting cellular repair and energy.
Cancer and its treatments (like chemotherapy, radiation, or medications) can be incredibly dehydrating. And when the body is under stress, it needs even more support to carry nutrients, regulate temperature, move your lymphatic system, and maintain organ function. Water is the vehicle for all of this.
A helpful guideline I learned is to drink about half your body weight in ounces of water each day. So, for example, if you weigh 160 pounds, aim for around 80 ounces of water daily. Of course, this can vary depending on your activity level, medications, and climate, but it’s a good starting point.
We purchased a Berkey water filtration system in 2022, and it has become one of the most worthwhile and meaningful additions to our home. The Berkey uses gravity-fed filters to remove more than 99 percent of common contaminants, including heavy metals, chlorine, pesticides, and even some pharmaceuticals. It doesn’t require electricity or plumbing, and the filters last a long time, which also makes it more sustainable than many other systems. Most importantly, it gives us peace of mind knowing we’re drinking clean, mineral-rich water.
We fill the Berkey daily and store the filtered water in glass bottles. It feels good to have moved away from plastic and toward something that supports both our health and the environment.
Whenever possible, natural spring water is ideal, as it contains beneficial trace minerals and hasn’t been treated with chlorine or fluoride. But whatever your source, the goal is simple: keep it clean, and keep it flowing.
Healing is rarely fast and often complex, but water is a quiet companion in the process. It’s a small habit that can bring steady support to the body and a gentle reminder to care for ourselves in the most basic but powerful ways.
