Selenium is an essential trace mineral found naturally in soil, water, and certain foods. It plays an important role in many of the body’s processes - supporting cognitive function, strengthening the immune system, and helping stabilize thyroid health.
Like many nutrients, balance matters. While selenium is vital in small amounts, excessive intake can lead to side effects such as brittle nails, fatigue, nausea, and skin changes. In rare and extreme cases, overdose has been linked to more serious health issues, including heart or kidney failure.
One of the richest natural sources of selenium is the Brazil nut. Research has shown remarkable results: in one study, a single serving - about four Brazil nuts - lowered LDL (“bad”) cholesterol by an average of 20 points in just nine hours, a speed unmatched even by statin medications. Even more surprising, the participants’ cholesterol levels remained lower a full month later, despite having eaten only that one serving.
Because Brazil nuts are so high in selenium, moderation is key. Regularly eating too many could push you toward or beyond the recommended daily limit. I personally enjoy two Brazil nuts per day - enough to benefit from their nutrients without risking excess.
For me, this is a good reminder of how powerful whole foods can be, and why understanding both their benefits and limits allows us to enjoy them as part of a thoughtful, balanced diet.
